How Each Piece Begins

From there, I allow each word to speak—to say what it says and mean what it means—and I simply hear it. I take it in. I want to learn and appreciate the message. Absorb it. Consider it. Let it excite me, move me, guide me. These words are life.

Then, as I hear the words, the composition begins to emerge. It’s as though I begin to sense what part of God’s beautiful creation would best complement their message. Sometimes that means soft colors. Sometimes vibrant ones. Sometimes a particular tree, flower, mountain, or body of water. Sometimes it’s the layers that give the piece its character. Whatever feels like the most fitting way to honor the words. 

But every now and then, a piece begins with a stunning picture of something created by the Word—the Master Artist. Then begins the delightful search through my collection of words in waiting—verses that have long spoken to my own heart—and the joy of giving others the same opportunity I’ve received: to encounter the words and experience the wonder of the Word speaking to their own hearts.

Then comes the fun part: discovering which individual fonts or font pairings best suit the words, where they belong within the piece, and how they can speak their truth with clarity and strength while fitting naturally with the forests, fields, flowers, galloping horses, open skies, or quiet waters with which they’re paired.

Often, I’m immersed in worship as beautiful hymns, powerful words, and stunning imagery come together, and an original composition inspired by Scripture begins to take shape—an offering of gratitude and praise to the Author and Creator of it all.

By God’s beautiful grace, I create original artistic compositions inspired by Scripture that pair the beauty of creation with the enduring promises of God’s Word.

My prayer is that these pieces bring moments of reflection and rest to the spaces where we live, work, and gather, and that all who hear these timeless words will come to understand that it is with His Word—altogether lovely—and in His Word—faithful and true—that we live, and move, and have our being.
